Female Genital Mutilation

FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) also called female cutting is the cutting away of some or all of the external female genitalia. FGM is of no importance physically, psychologically nor health-wise, and so should be greatly frowned at.

It is also of Importance to note that FGM once done cannot be reversed which makes it the duty of you and I to prevent FGM by educating those around us on the adverse effects of FGM. These adverse effects can be short or long term, they include but not limited to;

  • Infections from the use of unsterilized instruments such as blade, scissors, knives etc
  • Infections can also result from urinary retension since part of the urine passageway has been cut off
  • The girl child will not derive pleasure from sexual intercourse in the future
  • The girl child might experience pain during intercourse which can result to marital strain
  • Inability to have intercourse in some cases

  • Difficulty urinating and menstruating
  • Painful menstruation
  • Inability to get pregnant and have children
  • Bleeding
  • Death.

Apart from these physiological adverse effects, FGM can also cause psychological effects such as;
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Shame and betrayal
  • Marital problems
  • Hatred for the parents

Once FGM has been done there is no cure, for this reason as a mother, as a father, as a man, as a woman, as a grandfather or grandmother, Let's save the future of our girl child,

SAY NO TO FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION.
